AI voice agents for lead qualification: cost and ROI

A voice agent can call every lead within minutes and pass only the interested ones to your sales team. Whether it pays off depends on your lead volume and your close rate, so do the sums first.

The short answer

An AI voice agent for lead qualification calls new enquiries, asks a short set of questions, records the answers and either books a meeting or marks the lead as not ready. It is worth the cost when you have enough leads that slow follow-up loses sales, and when your team currently spends hours on calls that go nowhere. It is a poor fit for very low volumes, or for sales where every first call needs deep consultation. The right number to track is cost per qualified lead, not cost per call.

Our voice AI agents service covers design, telephony and integration. This article shows how to estimate cost and return before you commit.

What the agent does

A well-scoped agent handles a narrow script. For example: confirm the lead's identity, ask what they want, ask about budget or timeline, check a few qualifying details and offer a callback slot. It uses speech-to-text to understand the caller, a language model to decide what to say next, and text-to-speech to reply. Good agents work in Hindi, Marathi and other Indian languages, and in mixed speech such as Hinglish, though quality should be tested for each language you need.

The agent then writes the outcome to your CRM or sheet, with a transcript and a short summary, so a salesperson picks up with context.

A worked example (hypothetical)

All figures below are assumed for illustration. Replace them with yours.

Suppose your business receives 1,500 leads a month. Today two telecallers call them, each costing Rs 25,000 a month in salary and overheads (Rs 50,000 in total). They reach and qualify about 40% of leads, mostly because calls happen late. Suppose an agent calls within five minutes and reaches 55%.

Formulas:

  • Cost per qualified lead = total monthly cost / qualified leads.
  • Extra sales value = extra qualified leads x close rate x average order value x margin.
ItemHuman onlyWith voice agent
Leads per month1,5001,500
Reached and qualified40% = 60055% = 825
Monthly costRs 50,000Rs 20,000 (one telecaller reviews and follows up) + Rs 30,000 (agent usage, telephony, hosting) = Rs 50,000
Cost per qualified leadRs 83Rs 61

Cost per qualified lead falls from about Rs 83 to Rs 61. The bigger gain is the 225 extra qualified leads. If 5% of them buy, that is about 11 extra customers. At an average order of Rs 40,000 and a 20% margin, the extra margin is roughly 11 x Rs 40,000 x 0.20 = Rs 88,000 a month. Against a one-time build of, say, Rs 3 lakh, payback comes in about four months in this scenario.

Change one input and the answer changes. If your close rate is 1% instead of 5%, the extra margin falls to about Rs 18,000 a month and payback stretches past a year. That is why a pilot with real numbers matters.

Risks you should plan for

  • Calling rules. India regulates unsolicited commercial calls through TRAI rules, and personal data handling falls under the DPDP Act. Confirm consent, DND handling and calling windows with your adviser before you dial.
  • Disclosure. Tell people they are speaking to an automated assistant. It builds trust and avoids complaints.
  • Accent, noise and language mix. Test on real recordings, not studio audio.
  • Wrong answers. Keep the script narrow and give the agent a clean way to hand over to a person.
  • Brand risk. A clumsy call costs more than a missed one. Listen to a sample of calls every week in the first months.

Voice agent or WhatsApp flow?

Voice suits leads who expect a call, such as loan, admission, property and insurance enquiries, and customers who prefer speaking in their own language. A WhatsApp flow suits leads who can answer in a few taps and do not want to be called. Some firms use both: a message first, then a call only for people who respond. Test which channel your leads actually answer before you invest in one.

When a voice agent is not the answer

If you get 50 leads a month, a person can call all of them. If leads are few but high value and need a relationship, a human call will serve better. If your problem is lead quality rather than follow-up speed, fix the source first. In some cases a WhatsApp Business flow does the job at lower cost, which is an easy route to explore through business process automation.

What a good pilot looks like

Start small and keep it measurable. Pick one lead source, one language and one calling window. Split the leads at random: let the agent call one half and your team call the other. After four to six weeks compare contact rate, qualified leads, meetings booked and, if the cycle allows, closed sales. Listen to a sample of recordings every week and change the script based on where callers hung up or got confused.

Also decide the handover rule in advance. If a caller asks for a person, shows anger or raises a topic outside the script, the agent should offer a callback from a human and log the reason. Those logs often show you where your own sales script is unclear, which is a useful by-product.

How to get started

  1. Count your monthly leads, current contact rate and cost of the calling team.
  2. Write the five questions that decide whether a lead is worth a salesperson's time.
  3. Decide the languages and calling hours you need.
  4. Reach out through the contact page with these numbers.

We run a limited pilot on a slice of your leads, with consent and handover rules agreed first, and report cost per qualified lead against your current baseline. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI voice agent cost in India?

It depends on scope, languages, call volume and integrations. Costs include a one-time build plus per-minute telephony and AI usage. Calculate cost per qualified lead against your current calling team to compare fairly.

Can an AI voice agent speak Hindi and Marathi?

Yes, modern speech and language models support Hindi, Marathi and other Indian languages, including mixed speech. Quality varies, so test with recordings of your own callers.

Are AI calling agents legal in India?

Rules on commercial calls and personal data apply, including TRAI regulations and the DPDP Act. We are not a law firm, so confirm consent, DND handling and call recording with your adviser.

Will customers know they are talking to an AI?

They should be told at the start of the call. Clear disclosure builds trust and keeps you on the safe side of consumer expectations.

How do I measure the ROI of a voice agent?

Track contact rate, qualified leads, cost per qualified lead and closed sales against your pre-agent baseline over at least one full sales cycle.
